Introducing Parsonage Battery Energy Storage System

Greenfield is preparing a planning application for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) located on land adjacent to Brabourne, Ashford, Kent, TN25 5LR.

Parsonage BESS will contribute towards the UK Government’s target to decarbonise and achieve a zero greenhouse gas emissions electricity supply by 2030. The BESS will store surplus electricity produced when wind turbines and solar farms generate more than the demand, and then release this energy back into the grid when demand exceeds generation. With BESS we can use renewable energy to power our homes and businesses when the wind stops blowing and the sun isn’t shining.

This network flexibility is increasingly essential as the UK shifts its electricity generation from gas and coal-fired power stations to renewable sources.

The Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan has estimated that the UK will need up to 27 GW of battery storage to achieve a clean electricity supply by 2030.

Ashford Borough Council has committed to becoming a carbon net zero council by 2030 and has promised to help the borough reduce their emissions to zero by 2050. This BESS will contribute to the fulfilment of local and national emissions targets.

Where would the batteries be built?

The Benefits

  • Assisting Ashford Borough Council in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with local and national targets in response to the Climate Emergency.

  • Contributing towards the security of energy supply in Kent through the provision of local, renewable electricity and battery storage.

  • Introducing BESS into the energy mix allows the electricity network to “balance” generation against demand, supporting the UK’s urgent need for energy security and energy independence.

  • Parsonage BESS would support the UK’s transition to a low carbon future, and contribute towards hitting its target of achieving a zero carbon electricity system by 2030.

  • Supporting the National Grid in providing renewable energy to power our homes and businesses when there’s minimal wind and no daylight.

  • Providing flexibility through rapid charge or discharge of electricity to allow the National Grid to regulate electricity supply and demand, whilst minimising greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Providing a significant biodiversity enhance impact with additional hedgerow and tree planting, wildflower grassland planting, as well as the retention of existing hedgerows and trees which will strengthen existing ecological networks.

  • Parsonage BESS is a temporary development, allowing the land to rest for a period of operation of up to 40 years which will improve its quality for agriculture.

  • Decommissioning and full restoration of the site at the end of life of the development will be secured via planning condition.

  • The proposed BESS will not require government subsidy.
